How it Happened:

  • The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Andrew Selima singled to lead off the frame and moved to second base after a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder David Kale. Selima then reached base after a fielding error by the Army shortstop and was able to score after Gionis forced a single through the left side.
  • McGowan fooled Army’s batters for much of the game, holding them scoreless with just three hits through seven complete innings.
  • The Crusaders tacked on insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Holy Cross loaded the bases with back-to-back walks and a single by junior third baseman Alex Volpi, and Kale scored from third base after a wild pitch. Gionis added on another RBI for the day with a single that scored sophomore catcher Zach Buck, and Rinaldi made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single to score Volpi.
  • Army began to rally in the eighth inning. The Black Knights put their first run on the board after a bases-loaded wild pitch, and added on two more runs after a two-out, two double stayed just fair inside the left-field line.
  • The Black Knights put on two runners with two outs, but freshman lefty Frank Spano secured the final out with a fly ball to right field.

  • Holy Cross has won 11 of its last 14 games and improves to 19-27 overall and 13-8 in the Patriot League. Army falls to 25-20 overall and 12-9 in conference play.
  • After taking three out of four games against Army in the weekend series and three out of five in the season series, the Crusaders sit in second place in the Patriot League, one game ahead of the Black Knights with four conference contests remaining on their schedule.
  • Holy Cross has now surpassed its win total from the 2018 season (18-27) with five regular-season games remaining.
  • McGowan had one of his best outings of the year in his longest appearance of 2019, holding the Black Knights without an extra base hit as he matched a season high with five strikeouts.
  • Selima has reached base in 12 consecutive games and owns an average of .340 on the year.
  • Sophomore lefty Luke Dawson has not allowed any runs in his last four appearances.
  • In between the two contests on Sunday, the Crusaders recognized their five graduating seniors: Gionis, McGowan, pitcher Declan Cronin, outfielder Kellen McCormick and pitcher Danny Barlok.

  • Holy Cross will play its final nonconference and home game of the regular season on Wednesday, May 1 against Marist.
  • First pitch at Fitton Field is set for 5:05 p.m.
