Rams finish regular season on a high note
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams finished atop the OUA West after winning 2-1 during their last game of the regular season against the York Lions on Sunday night.
John Carpino scored the pair of goals to advance the Rams past the Lions.
Off the draw the Rams came out with a strong pace against the Lions. It was clearly going to be a battle with each rush. Ryerson’s forecheck gave them possession for the majority of the first period and helped them to push past the Lions.
After a shot from the blue line, John Carpino made contact with the puck for a great tip and ended up going bar down to strike first for the Rams. Assists were given to Matt Nosella and Marcus Hinds.
Entering the second period, both the Lions and Rams were unable to capitalize on their power plays. The Rams had effective breakouts overall, but could not find the back of the net.
Rams Taylor Dupuis made some strong passes and displayed outstanding rebound control throughout the second period. By standing tall, he was not giving the Lions any opportunities to advance.
The Rams hit the cross bar a couple of times, but it was a great pass from Devon Paliani and Daniel Poliziani to John Carpino that put the Rams up 2-0.
In return, Lions forward Peter De Coppi found an opening on Dupuis to put them on the board at 2-1.
Entering the third, the Rams utilized their strong defense to keep the Lions away from Dupuis. When the Lions did get by, Dupuis easily controlled the crease. The Rams maintained their offense and speed to challenge the Lions with a number of chances. The priority was preventing the Lions from entering their zone by keeping three down low, which was effective. The third period remained scoreless and the Rams were able to hold off the Lions to win the game 2-1.
The Rams will play the Toronto Varsity Blues in the first round of playoffs. The first game will be Thursday, February 14th at 7:15 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
