Rams fall to Gryphons in overtime battle

By Cara Gilhula

TORONTO - Even though the Rams fell 4-3 to the Guelph Gryphons after a tough overtime battle on Thursday night, the Rams are fired up for WOCO on Saturday.

The Rams came out with a competitive start in mind after making their way back into the No. 10 spot in this week's national rankings.

It was Mark Shoemaker (Mississauga, Ont.) who came off the bench and fired one from the blue line to strike first for the Rams. Steven Harland (Toronto, Ont.) and Devon Paliani (La Salle, Ont.) were in front of the net to support the shot, and David Miller (Burlington, Ont.) was credited for the assist.

“It feels good. I haven’t scored many goals in the last few years. I get put in a lot of defense situations, that’s my strong suit, but I do like to put a puck in the other team's net here and there,” said Shoemaker.

This was Shoemaker’s second goal of the season.

The Rams saw 14 shots for the first period versus the Gryphons' 10.

During the second period, the Gryphons came out firing every chance they got. Rams goalie Troy Timpano (Pickering, Ont.) stood tall, long enough for the Rams to get another for insurance.

Alex Basso (Toronto, Ont,) earned his sixth goal of the year. Zachary Shankar (Prescott, Ont.) started the play by passing the puck deep into the Gryphons corner to John Carpino (Maple, Ont.). Carpino gave a quick back hand pass to Vince Figliomeni (Bolton, Ont.). Figliomeni made the pass up the boards to Basso at the blue line. With an accurate target in mind, Basso fired a clear shot to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.

Timpano, physical in net, was stuck in the crease and unable to save a shot from Tryg Strand.  Overall, Timpano was quick and accurate with his saves, which kept the Rams in the game for the second period at 2-1.

“He's been playing great for us, and giving us a chance to win every night,” says head coach, Johnny Duco.

“Timpano is getting more and more confident with each start he gets right now and its pushing the other two to step up their game, so we’re lucky right now.”

At the end of the second period of play the shots were tied at 23.

The Rams entered the third with a decrease of offense, and they were losing their energy. This came into play when the Rams were caught on a number of penalties, which lead to a penalty shot by Strand. It was a tough one for Timpano, and the Gryphons tied things up at 2-2.

After a hit on Basso, the Rams broke out of their shell and were fired up once again.

Timpano made the next save, but Connor Bramwell caught the rebound to gain the lead at 3-2.

With three minutes remaining, Mathew Santos (Toronto, Ont.) took a slapshot on net from the blue line and the puck trickled into the net. This was Santos's 16th goal of the season. Alex Basso (Toronto) and Greg DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.) earned the assists.

At the end of the third, the game was tied at 3-3.

During overtime, the Rams had a number of strong chances, but could not catch a break. Timpano also made a number of outstanding saves. However, on a breakaway by Ryan Valentini, Timpano was able to stop the first shot, but after being down, Valentini caught his own rebound and went over Timpano for the overtime winner. The Rams fell 4-3.

“We did lot of really good things, probably a few too many mistakes but the effort was there. We were executing but just need to capitalize on those chances, and unfortunately we are only leaving with one point,” says Duco.

Looking ahead, the Rams will welcome cross-town rival, the York Lions to the Mattamy Athletic Centre for WOCO and the Subway Series at 2:15 p.m.

“It’s another conference rival that always plays tough and hopefully it’ll be a good crowd in here and it’ll be a fun atmosphere. I expect nothing but the same, the guys will bring the effort and look to execute, minimize our mistakes and capitalize on some of the chances,” says Duco.

WOCO tickets are FREE for all Ryerson students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The tailgate party will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Upper Deck by Frans for food and beverage specials, and a chance to win Raptors box tickets!
