Basso leads Rams to victory over Golden Hawks

By Cara Gilhula

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams visited the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night and came away with a 4-3 win.

The Golden Hawks’ Ethan Wiseman struck first with a quick goal to open the first period. This was Rams Troy Timpano’s (Pickering, Ont.) first OUA start.

Timpano made a number of sprawling glove saves to keep the Rams in the period. Although, Golden Hawks Michael Silveri made it 2-0 after much discussion with the referees from Ryerson.

In return, Mathew Santos (Toronto) won the face off and made his way down to the Golden Hawks zone to make it 2-1.

Minutes later, Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) found success with the Rams powerplay once again and fired the puck in the top corner to tie the game.

The Rams remain first overall with a 28.2% power play percentage.

Overall, it was a physical period and the Rams were able to maintain possession off the faceoff majority of the time, and capitalize on the powerplay.

In the second period the Rams excelled at defense as the Golden Hawks were unable to capitalize on their own powerplay. After a called back goal, the Golden Hawks failed to bounce back again the offensive Rams.

All the while, Ryerson captain, Alex Basso (Toronto), made his way into the zone and fired a wrist shot to give the Rams a 3-2 lead to take into the third period.

Unfortunately, early on into the third, Laurier’s Kyle Jenkins tied things up at 3-3 with the Rams.

But Basso was still fired up since being taken down in the first period and let a shot rip from the point. The Rams set up a screen and Basso gave the Rams a 4-3 lead to take the game.

Laurier had 36 shots to Ryerson’s 23. Timpano pulled through and earned his second OUA win in as many games, even after early goals.

The Rams are now 14-5-1.

They will welcome the Guelph Gryphons to Mattamy Home Ice on January 17th at 7:15 p.m. before hosting the York Lions for Ryerson’s WOCO and Subway Series on January 19th at 2:15 p.m. For live updates, follow us on Twitter.
