Mistele's hat trick gives Rams advantage over Lions

By Cara Gilhula

TORONTO - The Rams came into their own during their visit with the York Lions and took control of the game to win 8-3.

After coming away with a win over Brock last night, the Rams were uncertain of what tonight’s game was going to bring. Last season, York ended Ryerson’s season during playoffs, but tonight, you wouldn’t have been able to tell that was the case.
Both the Rams and Lions came out fast, but York started the scoring off with an early powerplay goal by Morgan Messenger.
Late in the first period with only 1:30 left, Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) fired a rocket during the powerplay to tie the game 1-1. Hayden McCool earned the assist (Whitby, Ont).
With 0.6 seconds left in the first period, Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) found the bounce to give the Rams a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. John Carpino (Maple, Ont.) and Marcus Hinds (Toronto, Ont.) received the assists.
Halfway through the second period, Josh LaFrance caught the rebound to bring the game to 2-2 during a Lions power play at 11:33.
Although, with only 11 seconds left in the second period, Mark Shoemaker (Mississauga, Ont.) found Carpino in an opening. Carpino then made the touch to Hinds, who finished off the second period with a goal to make it 3-2 for the Rams.
Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.) made a number of great saves to keep the Rams in check throughout the second period, which helped make way for the high scoring third period.
To start, Mistele earned his second power play goal of the evening with a strong tape to tape pass from Alex Basso (Toronto, Ont). The Rams extended their lead to 4-2.
Shortly after, Gregory DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.) made his way around the Lions and gave the puck to Hinds. Hinds then moved further into the Lion’s zone, and scored his second goal of the game. The Rams furthered their lead at 5-2.
York’s Stefano Pezzetta quickly returned the favour and minimized the Rams edge to 5-3.

With five minutes left, top OUA goal scorer Mathew Santos (Toronto, Ont.) found Basso at the point. Basso saw the clearing and gave Mistele the advantage for his third goal of the night. Mistele’s hat trick also awarded him a total of nine goals this season, which places him at the top of the OUA goal leaderboard with Santos.

With a strong 6-3 advance, the Rams were sitting comfortably in the end of the third and were not letting up.
Not a minute later, Mistele and Santos moved together up the ice and organized the play for McCool to earn an empty net goal. The Rams advanced 7-3. First year Jesse Barwell (Oakville, Ont.) recorded his first goal of the season with help from David Miller (Burlington, Ont).
The Rams beat the York Lions 8-3 for their seventh win of the season. The Rams also have scored 49 goals in their last nine games.
Looking ahead, the Rams will visit Waterloo on November 9th at 7:00 p.m. before heading home on Saturday, November 10th to host Western at 4:15 p.m. For live updates, follow us on Twitter.
