Carpino earns Rams overtime win

By Cara Gilhula

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Rams started their road trip off with an exciting win against the UOIT Ridgebacks at the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa on Friday night. In order to earn their fourth straight win of the season, the Rams won 4-3 in overtime.

The Rams showed off their strong offense later on in the first period. Gregory DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.) made the effective pass to Mathew Santos (Toronto, Ont.) who found Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) to quickly to catch the Ridgebacks off guard. Mistele struck first against the Ridgebacks to lead 1-0 heading into intermission.

During the second period the Rams fought hard, and were able to get deep in the Ridebacks' zone, except could not complete the play. Ryerson continued to look to increasing their lead, except both teams were scoreless during the second period.

During the second intermission, something rallied the offense in both teams. It was clear that UOIT was looking to earn a goal against the Rams in the third period. Early on in, UOIT's Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.) saw a lonely puck sitting in front of Ryerson’s net and quickly took advantage of the play. The score was tied 1-1.

Not long after at 1:58 in the third period Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) returned the favour and scored for the Rams. Assists were recorded for Marcus Hinds (Toronto, Ont.) and DiTomaso. Rams now lead 2-1.

After a screen and tip from the blue line, the Rams were left scrambling in their end, and UOIT's Spencer Roberts (Stouffville, Ont.) tied the game 2-2.

It didn’t take long for the Rams to get back on track. Mistele took matters into his own hands by scoring his second of the game at 14:10 in the third period from Paliani and Santos. Mistele’s two goal execution moves him to the top of the OUA leaderboard with five goals scored, and a total of ten points. Rams were leading 3-2.

With only seconds left in the game, it seemed that the final was going to be 3-2 for Ryerson. The Rams cleared it down the ice and UOIT had trouble getting around Mistele again, who has scored at least once in every one of the Rams regular season games. Except UOIT found a chance for an offensive advance and carried it out of their zone after pulling their goalie.  Brennan Roy (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) shot the puck hard towards the net from the blue line and scored a buzzer beater goal at 19:55 to take the game into overtime.

Considering that three goals is the most Ryerson has allowed so far this season, the Ridgebacks ability to come back after Ryerson controlled most of the game confirmed the strong matchup that the Rams knew they were walking into.

During overtime the play was back and forth. Both teams were struggling to gain control and take advantage of an offensive strategy. Luckily for the Rams, DiTomaso found the tape of fifth year John Carpino (Maple, Ont.), who found himself in a two-on-one situation. Carpino kept the puck and was able to find the opening to rip the puck into the net to score his first goal of the season and make the final score 4-3 for the Rams.

The Ryerson Rams look to earn another two points tomorrow night against Concordia at Ed Meager Arena. Puck drop will be at 7:30pm.
