Rams kick start road trip with win over No. 7 Guelph

By Jessica Pincente

GUELPH, Ont. - Despite scoring two goals in the dying moments of the third period, the No. 7 Guelph Gryphons came up just short against the No. 8 Ryerson Rams, as the visiting Rams took a 4-3 victory Thursday night on the road.

The Gryphons struck first in the game, putting themselves ahead 1-0 off a Cody Thompson (Mississauga, Ont.) rebound shot midway through the first.

The Rams found themselves trailing for the first time this season, but Ryerson senior Vince Figliomeni (Bolton, Ont.) soon took matters into his own hands.  Set up by Steve Harland (Toronto, Ont.), Figliomeni found himself in perfect position to tap the puck past Gryphons goaltender Evan Cormier (Bowmanville, Ont.) to tie the game at one with five minutes left in the second period.

Mathew Santos (Toronto, Ont.) opened up the scoring in the third for the Rams in a bizarre fashion, throwing the puck on net and watching it squeak through the pads of Cormier just one minute into the period. Ryerson goaltender Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.) and forward Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) recorded assists on the play.

Mistele and Marcus Hinds (Toronto, Ont.) went on to notch two beautiful goals later in the period, extending Ryerson’s lead to three. Rookie Jesse Barwell (Oakville, Ont.) tallied his first OUA assist on Mistele’s third-period goal.

With just 90 seconds remaining in the game, Guelph captain Todd Winder (Uxbridge, Ont.) cut Ryerson’s lead to two and sparked an offensive push for the Gryphons.

The Gryphons would add another goal with 1.4 seconds left in the game, but the Rams walked away with a 4-3 victory.

Mistele’s two-point performance on Thursday sees his production total increase to an OUA-best six points, while Santos leads the league in scoring with four goals in two games. Harland also sits atop the OUA leaderboard with four assists on the year.

The Rams will be back in action this Friday, heading down to Varsity Arena to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:00 p.m.
