CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coming fresh off of a tough road win last weekend, the College of Charleston men’s soccer team (2-1) plays its first CAA opponent of the season when the (RV) Elon Phoenix (3-1) come to challenge them at Patriots Point.
The Cougars were able to shut out the Furman Paladins on Sep 3 in Greenville, with Kevin Shields picking up the shutout win on a two-save effort. Avery Ryan picked up the game-winning goal early in the game, and Eli Dent scored the insurance goal late in the second half to seal the deal. Leland Archer was a big-time contributor as well, picking up an assist on both goals.
Elon comes off a sweep of the Elon/High Point Classic, having picked up a pair of wins over St. Bonaventure and Detroit Mercy, the former of which was a 6-0 slaughter. Junior forward Elijah Agu is far and away the most accomplished offensive threat for the Phoenix this year, with 11 points (5g, 1a) already this season. In frame, Elon has relied on sophomore keeper Matthew Jegier, who’s been remarkably untested this season with only nine shots on goal. He’s registered six saves, with three goals against.
The last two times the Cougars and Phoenix faced have resulted in a pair of overtime wins for Elon. The last time the College prevailed in the series was back in 2012, when CofC won 3-2 against a No. 20 ranked Elon squad. Connor Coons scored the game-winner in that one on an assist from Ralphie Lundy in the 35th minute.
