SUMMER 2019: Selected to the 2019 Walker Cup Team, becoming just the second Blue Devil to earn a spot (Dick Siderowf in 1969, 1973, 1975, 1977 and 1979) ... competed for the United States in the Palmer Cup, going 3-1 in his matches ... won the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur (-10) for the second consecutive year, becoming the tournament's first repeat winner since Rickie Fowler in 2007 and 2008 ... earned an exemption to play in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst, his fourth consecutive year playing in the pinnacle event of amateur golf ... finished 17th in the North-South Amateur at Pinehurst ... was in second after three rounds in The Players Amateur, where he finished eighth -- missed qualifying for the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship by one stroke.

2017-18: Golfweek All-America honorable mention selection ... named to the PING All-Region team … earned All-ACC honors … posted a program record 70.78 stroke average … set additional program records in the categories of most birdies made in a season (152) as well as rounds at par or better (25) … shot a season-low 65 twice (The Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, Stitch Intercollegiate) … best finish came at the Stitch Intercollegiate after shooting a 206 (-10) to finish T-2 … recorded a team-best five top-5 finishes … finished as the top Blue Devil in both the ACC Championship and Raleigh NCAA Regional, carding 12th-place and 10th-place finishes, respectively ... led the team both in rounds counted (33.33).

SUMMER 2017: Reached match play at the U.S Amateur.

2016-17: A PING All-East Region selection … named to the All-ACC and All-ACC Academic teams … played in all 13 tournaments, spanning 39 rounds … finished with a team-best 71.54 scoring average … carded the team-best low 54 of the season (204) … best finish came at the GCU Invitational, where finished tied for second with a nine-under 204 (69-69-66) … shared fourth at the Inverness Intercollegiate with a two-under 211 (72-69-70) … also shared fourth at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, shooting a six-under 208 (73-65-70) … finished tied for 10th at the Mason Rudolph Championship after carding a five-under 208 (70-68-70) … secured a T-5 finish at the ACC Championship, posting a four-under 212 (73-69-70) … shot an even 216 (71-71-74) at the Baton Rouge NCAA Regional, good enough for a T-3 finish.

SUMMER 2016: Won the individual medal at the 2016 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club with a total of 133 (-7) … posted the second-lowest stroke-play total in U.S. Amateur history … advanced to the round of 32 in match play before being eliminated from the tournament.

2015-16: A PING All-East Region selection … named to the All-ACC Academic Team … played in all 12 tournaments on the season, spanning 33 rounds … ranked third on the team with a 72.67 scoring average, the third-best in Duke history by a freshman … tallied one win, an additional top-five finish and two top-10 efforts … tied the Duke freshman record with 11 under-par rounds … totaled 16 rounds at par or better, good for second on Duke’s freshman chart … became just the fourth freshman in Duke history to win a tournament when he shot 134 (68-66, -8) to claim the individual medal at the Princeton Invitational … shared third place at the Seahawk Intercollegiate with a four-under 140 (70-70) … tied for seventh at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate with a one-over 217 (73-70-74) … finished in an eighth-place tie at the Prestige at PGA WEST with a two-under 211 (70-69-72) … tied for 23rd at the ACC Championship with a one-over 217 (73-71-73) … Duke’s top finisher at the NCAA Stillwater Regional, placing 21st with a total of 227 (+11).

PERSONAL: Born Alex Anthony Smalley on October 21, 1996, in Rochester, N.Y. .. son of Terry and Maria Smalley ... mother, Maria, earned a Ph.D. at Duke in 1995 ... has a sister, Katie ... earned his undergraduate degree from Duke in environmental science in May 2019 ... grew up in Wake Forest, N.C., and attended Wake Forest HS before later moving to Greensboro.
