Walnut Creek, Calif.-----For the first time in its long-standing football series dating back to 1900, San Jose State and Stanford will begin a season against each other on a Friday when the two teams kickoff their 2012 schedules.

The Spartans and the Cardinal will meet for the 66th time on Friday, August 31, in a 7:00 p.m. (PDT) game that will be televised by the new Pac-12 Network.

"It's exciting for our program to open against an excellent team in Stanford on a Friday night. There won't be many games on and it will give both of us a greater stage. It's a great opportunity for our kids," says San Jose State football head coach Mike MacIntyre.

The 2012 game will be the 16th time San Jose State and Stanford meet in the season opener for both teams. The most recent occurrence was a year ago in Stanford Stadium. The only time the two squads played each other in San Jose State's Spartan Stadium in a season opener was in 1995.

With today's announcement, four San Jose State's games now are assigned for a live broadcast and all regular season contests except for the September 22 San Diego State game have a kickoff time.
