|Errors Costly In 5-4 Loss At BYU|
Provo, Utah-Three errors by the San Jose State softball team cost the Spartans four runs against Brigham Young in a 5-4 loss Friday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference game in Provo.
Vanessa House was the Spartans' bright spot on Friday as she hit her fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning. With Jessica Garcia and Breanna Lopez on base, House took the first pitch she saw deep over the right field fence to give San Jose State a 3-2 lead.
The Spartans first error came in the third inning as Spartan BranDee Garcia committed a fielding error to load the bases. The WAC's leading hitter Delany Willard then singled to left field to drive in two runs.
With the score tied 3-3 in the sixth, BYU had runners on the corners with one out when Cougar Shelbi Everett popped out to pitcher Amanda Pridmore. Pridmore then tried to double off the BYU runner who was caught off base, but her throw sailed over the base and allowed BYU to take a 4-3 lead.
San Jose State rallied in the seventh inning as Alex Stange started the frame with a single and advanced to second on an overthrow by the left fielder. Pinch runner Nicole Schultz was able to advance to third on a Markesha Collins groundout. Michelle Cox then doubled to center field to score Schultz from third to tie the score at 4-4, but Cox was thrown out at third trying to extend the hit to a triple to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, BYU got a runner on when JC Clayton singled and advanced to second on a BranDee Garcia throwing error. After intentionally walking Willard, BYU got an infield hit that scored Clayton from second.
Pridmore fell to 16-11 on the season in the loss. She struck out six in 6.1 innings pitched and moved into fourth on the San Jose State single strikeout list with 159.
"Vanessa's home run in the fourth inning was a bomb over the right field fence," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner. "However, we cannot give free passes to our opponents and commit errors and expect to win. We have to make routine plays in order to be successful."
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. MDT/12:30 p.m. PDT. Both games can be seen on BYUtv and byutv.org.
