|Women's Golf Extends Lead At WAC Championship|
Mesa, Ariz. - The temperature in Mesa, Ariz., cooled off from Monday's 103 degrees, but the San Jose State women's golf team stayed hot backing up their opening round 291 with another 291 for a 582 total, increasing their lead to 14 strokes after two rounds of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Longbow Golf Club.
Freshman Kathleen Rojas led the Spartans with a 69, the low individual score of the day for the field. She moved from a tie for 10th after round one to a second-place tie at 144, three behind Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro who is at three-under par, 141.
"This is definitely the best I have played this year," said Rojas who is at even par for the championship . "I was working on my irons on the practice range last night and this morning. Today, they were spot on for me."
Rojas, who played the front nine of round one in four over-par, recorded six birdies and just two bogeys in her last 27 holes. Today, she completed her first bogey-free round as a collegiate with three birdies and shot her low round of the season
Joining Rojas in second is Madeleine Ziegert, who was five-over after eight holes but finished with birdies on three of the last four holes to post a two-over 74.
"I have been competing with (Idaho's) Kayla (Mortellaro) for four years," Ziegert said. "I think I went out today and was trying too hard to make things happen. When I relaxed and trusted my swing, my game improved. On the back I was hitting fairways that I seem to miss again and again. The birdie on 15 was a real confidence boost and helped propel me to the finish."
Jennifer Brumbaugh backed up her first round 73 with another one-over 73 and is in a tie for fifth place at 146, five strokes back.
"Yesterday, I was fighting it a bit," Brumbaugh said. "I was pretty happy with that score, but today I was in a position to score, and I didn't take advantage. This course sets up well for me. I can reach the par fives with irons. Tomorrow, I have to score better."
"I am really happy with the way our entire team performed today, especially in the final six holes," head coach John Dormann said, "The way we battled really made me proud. I think Idaho cut our lead to seven strokes in the middle of the round, when we were struggling a bit. But we finished the round strong and are in a position, if we play well tomorrow, to get the result we came here for."
The Championship wraps up on Wednesday on the 6,163 yard, par 72 course. Reali tees off at 8:20 a.m., Osland at 8:30 a.m., Brumbaugh at 8:40 a.m., Rojas at 8:50 a.m., and Ziegert in the final group at 9:00 a.m. Fans can follow the action through the Live Stats feature at www.sjsuspartans.com.
