Xavier Jones, a 6-foot-4 guard currently enrolled at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill., signed a National Letter-of-Intent to enroll at San Jose State University in the 2012 fall semester. George Nessman, the Spartans' men's basketball coach, made the announcement.

            Xavier (ECK-say-VEE-ur) averaged 11.3 points a game last season for James Logan College. He spent his freshman year at Midland College in Odessa, Texas.

             "We are excited that Xavier Jones has joined our program. Xavier has a clear chance to be a significant player in the WAC and one of the best newcomers in our conference," says Nessman about Jones who is capable of playing any guard position.

             "'X' is a big, strong guard who plays with an edge. He has all the necessary skills and is a tough competitor. We've known 'X 'since he was a junior in high school, and we like him a great deal as a young person. There is little doubt that Xavier should prove to be an asset to Spartan basketball."

            Coming out of high school, Jones reportedly received scholarship offers from Marquette, Dayton, Purdue and Virginia Tech. As a junior at West Side High School in Gary, Ind., he earned Associated Press honorable mention all-state and Northwest Times (Munster, Indiana) Player of the Year honors averaging 21.3 points and 5.4 assists per game. As a senior, he averaged 10.1 points a game for the Wayne High team in Huber Heights, Ohio that posted a 21-3 win-loss record and won the Greater Western Ohio - Central league championship.

            Jones is the second San Jose State University signee during the Spring 2012 National Letter-of-Intent period. Earlier, Louis Garrett, a 6-foot-6 forward from Salt Lake Community College, signed with the Spartans. And, 6-foot-9 junior-to-be Chris Cunningham, who played his first two seasons at Santa Clara University, will join the team for the 2012-13 season.
