Gene Brooks enters his third season as head cross country and track and field coach at the University of Sioux Falls. In his inaugural campaign as a head coach he guided Kyla Tysdal to the NCAA Region III Championships. The women's team also won the South Dakota State Invitational.

In 2008, the Cougars had another solid season in both track and cross country. Devon Berkness qualified for the NAIA Fall Cross Country Championships held in Kenosha, Wisc., and finished 157th out of 258 runners. In May, the Cougar track team took part in the GPAC championships, held in Sioux City, where Jon Ryan finished second in the long jump, Regan Kuipers took home first in the 400-meter dash and Carrie Nix finished seventh in the 1500-meter run. Prior to joining USF, Brooks served as the assistant track coach at Concordia University (Neb.) since 1998. During his nine years at Concordia, Brooks has coached 25 NAIA All-Americans; 10 of which were NAIA National Champions. He also coached the indoor and outdoor GPAC Conference record holders in long jump for men and pole vault for men and women. Brooks served as assistant coach in 2000 when the Concordia men's team won runner-up at the NAIA Indoor Championships.

Brooks received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education at Concordia University in 1987. He also received a master's degree in family life ministry in 2003. As a student-athlete at Concordia, Brooks was an eight-time NAIA All-American and five-time NAIA national champion in pole vault. In 2004, he was inducted into the NAIA Track and Field Hall of Fame.
