General FAQs

Why does Appalachian State feel they need to create a plan for tailgating?

The gameday atmosphere at Appalachian State is second to none in the college football football world. It's a time we gather to celebrate the exploits of a championship-caliber football team while enjoying the opportunity to visit the App State campus as well as the High Country community. In order for these traditions to continue, we must be good stewards of the opportunities provided to us on fall Saturdays.

By creating a tailgate plan, we are able to present timely and relevant information to our patrons, identify areas for fans of all ages to tailgate and enjoy the pregame atmosphere, and set guidelines for positive conduct so that all can enjoy the gameday experience.

What is the CLASS program?

Today I Give My ALL For Appalachian State is the foundation for Appalachian State athletics and the University as a whole. Together, Appalachian administrators and students have developed an initiative to encourage first-class conduct at all Appalachian athletic events. We all share in the responsibility of promoting good sportsmanship at games and ensuring that past, present and future Mountaineers learn the positive nature of supporting our teams. The initiative "CLASS" (Champions Love Appalachian State Spirit) - gives us a mechanism to guide all external friends of the University that will lead to a positive and enthusiastic game day atmosphere.  For more information on this program, click HERE.

Are tickets available for purchase on gamedays?

If there are any remaining to be sold, the Kidd Brewer Stadium ticket plaza, located near The Rock on the northeast side of the stadium, will be open for gameday sales 4½ hours prior to kickoff.  Cash, Visa and MasterCard are acceptable methods of payment.  With ticket demand at an all-time high, now is a good time to get in the habit of purchasing tickets in advance at or by phone at (828) 262-2079.

Can I re-enter the stadium if I leave before the end of the game?

Re-entry is not allowed.

PARKING FAQs (back to top)

Where can I find up-to-date parking and traffic information on gameday?

Any urgent parking and traffic information that needs to be addressed on a gameday will be communicated to WATA AM 1450. Any changes or updates made during the week leading up to a game will be posted on TailgateAtThe as well as Our parking and traffic procedures are not likely to change much throughout the year, but it's always best to double-check those sites prior to departure just to be on the safe side.

Where can I set up my tailgate within a parking lot?

To ensure everyone has equal space and that plenty of space is available for gameday use, fans are limited to one space for one car. Tailgates may be set up at your vehicle provided they do not block access for vehicular traffic passing through the lots.

What do I do if I forgot my Yosef Club parking tag?
You will need to find a new place to park.

The best thing to do is leave your hang tag in your car after each game to avoid misplacing such a precious commodity. There will be no lists, no bribes and no access for those who forget their pass.

What is the best way to exit campus parking areas after the game?
Guests will leave the stadium via the main gates. No access to the track or field will be allowed until all players and staff have cleared to the locker room area. Also, no traffic will be allowed to access Stadium Drive from Rivers Street for 45 minutes after the conclusion of the game.
Fans leaving the stadium area for Foscoe, Banner Elk, and other destinations accessed by Hwy 105 are encouraged to use Poplar Grove Rd when exiting. Access to Hwy 105 can also be attained by traveling King Street/US 421 to the Hwy 105 by-pass. The by-pass will take you to Hwy 105 near New River Building Supply.
Fans heading to Blowing Rock and other points accessible from Blowing Rock Rd are encouraged to use Rivers Street to access that path near the Holmes Convocation Center.

TAILGATE FAQs (back to top)

What are the rules regarding alcohol consumption at tailgates?
Rules for the consumption of alcoholic beverages in parking lots designated for such activity are consistent with North Carolina State law. Malt beverages and unfortified wine may be consumed in these locations by those fans of legal drinking age.

Those that choose to consume alcohol must be able to present a valid driver's license or photo ID to reflect their age upon request. Spirituous liquor, kegs, common containers, and glass containers are not permitted in any location. Consumption of alcoholic beverages in designated lots may begin no earlier than 3½ hours prior to kickoff.

To summarize in simple terms, if you follow the rules and consume alcohol responsibly, and in the proper areas, you will not have a problem. Some tailgates will have alcohol and some will choose not to participate in those activities. Acting maturely and responsibly will ensure all patrons are able to enjoy their gameday experience in the proper manner.

What time does the campus open for tailgating?
Campus lots that have been designated for tailgating will open for entry promptly 3½ hours prior to kickoff  on gamedays, subject to change. Please check for updated tailgate time information.

What areas are available for student tailgates on gamedays?
Students are fans too, meaning that any area that is open to the general public is also available for student use for tailgating. The most popular student destination is Greenwood Lot, located off Bodenheimer Drive, which features convenient walking access to Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Appalachian State University Student Government Association will also make 150 parking spaces available in Raley Lot for student tailgating on a per-game basis. Those passes will be made available through a lottery system to current App State students. For more information, visit the SGA website.

Can I bring my grill to my tailgate?
The Appalachian State University football tailgating policy states that propane and charcoal grills are the only permissible sources of heat for cooking. Burned coals and/or residue from cooking may not be permitted to make contact with the paved surface of the parking lot. Hot coals must be completely extinguished with water prior to leaving the tailgating site. Open flame fires, including fire pits, are prohibited.

Where can I set up if I have a corporate tailgate?
The Appalachian State campus features several unique spaces that provide the optimal setting for "corporate" or "professional" tailgates. Whether you have a business that can benefit from gameday hospitality or a group of friends that desires a more organized tailgate experience, the Appalachian Athletics department offers locations that can handle your needs. For information on reserving space and catering ideas, contact Ashley Payne, director of fan engagement and promotions at (828) 262-6554.

Are there places I can take my trash on gamedays?
Yes, and thanks for asking.

In order to make things easy for trash collection on gamedays, dumpsters have been placed in high-traffic tailgate areas for easy dispersal of garbage following tailgating. Representatives from a number of agencies will be passing out trash bags in various parking lots throughout the day.  Please look for the Clean Up After Yosef signage around campus and don't forget to drop your trash in one of those containers on your way to the stadium.

Imagine having a party in your backyard and instead of your guests throwing their paper plates in the trash, they just toss them all over your yard. We ask that our tailgating patrons treat the Appalachian State campus with the same respect as your own personal property.

Are bathrooms in dormitories available for public use?
No, however, there is an ample supply of restroom facilities available for use around campus as well as inside Kidd Brewer Stadium. For safety precautions, no one is allowed into a residence hall without proper escort from a resident of that building. Bathrooms are available for use in Trivette Hall, Plemmons Student Union and Central Dining Hall and portable bathrooms are located in parking lots and tailgate locations throughout campus.

Where can I get power for my tailgate?
We recommend that you use your vehicle to power any audio or video equipment. AC converters can be purchased at most electronics stores. Generators are not prohibited, but are not recommended as they present many safety hazards.

Are there any ATMs on campus?
Yes, inside  Trivette Hall (BB&T), Plemmons Student Union (BB&T - 2nd level outside, Cash Points - downstairs near the Appalachian State Bookstore and Crossroads Coffee House), Rivers St. across from the parking deck (Bank of America, Wells Fargo).

What is Mountaineer Walk and where does it start?
Fans at Kidd Brewer Stadium line the path as they give the Appalachian Football team one final pat on the back during Mountaineer Walk, approximately 3½ hours prior to kickoff on home gamedays.

Join the Appalachian State Cheerleaders and the Marching Mountaineers at the tunnel exit, where they will be waiting to give the team a loud boost as they make their way in between Newland and Trivette Halls, and on into the stadium parking lot.

Make as much noise as you can while cheering on the Black & Gold as they prepare for another gameday at The Rock!
