BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Georgia women's track and field team got their first taste of competition in their first indoor meet before the start of the Wolves' season on Sunday afternoon at the Emory Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Wolves finished seventh overall as a team.
CARROLLTON, Ga. – The road trip through the south end of the Gulf South Conference ended on a sour note on Sunday afternoon at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga., as the Wolves fell by a 112-94 score to the Valdosta State Blazers. Valdosta State came out firing on all cylinders early in the contest, opening up an early 12-4 lead in the first four minutes. Over the next four minutes, the Blazers continued to shoot well, leading 22-13 at the under-12 timeout with 11:58 left in the game. Over the final 12 minutes of the first half, the Blazers continued with the offensive pressure, leading by as many as 21 points in that span, and the teams headed into the locker room with Valdosta State leading by a 51-35 score. Laperion Perry was a spark off the bench, scoring seven points in the final 10 minutes of the half and Steven Ross buried a three-pointer in the final seconds of the period to cut the VSU lead to 16 at the break. In the second half, Valdosta State rode on the back of a three-point shooting exhibition from guard Beau Justice, who hit six three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the second half, as the Blazers continued with an 84-66 lead with 11:26 left in the game. Over the final 11 minutes of the contest, the Wolves cut the VSU lead to as little as 15, but could get no closer. Five Wolves scored in double-figures in the contest, led by Marquill Smith with 22 points. William Sides added 17, while Karlos Odum had 14. Ovie Magbegor and Steven Ross each had 10 points in the loss. West Georgia falls to 8-10 on the year and 3-8 in Gulf South Conference play, while Valdosta State moves to 17-2 overall with a 10-1 record against league opponents. The Wolves are back in action at home on Thursday evening, taking on the West Alabama Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
